Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios is a Robusto Extra, measuring at 140mm with a 50 gauge, Genios are the largest of the Maduro range. Cohiba introduced the Linea Maduro 5 collection in 2007, unique to all 3 cigars in this range, the tobacco wrapper is the Dark Maduro leaf. This leaf grows at the very top of shade grown plants, requiring an additional ageing and fermentation process over the course of 5 years, resulting in a sweeter flavour and inspiring the name of this collection. Filled with the signature tobacco blend exclusive to Cohiba, all of their vitolas are Totalmente a Mano, Tripa Larga – long filler, hand made, in the famous El Laguito factory. The aromas are lively with cinnamon and honey at the top, the rich flavours developed as we smoked initially displaying notes of coffee and roasted tobacco, later developing into chocolate and touches of nutty nougat. Overview: Cohiba Talisman Limited Edition 2017 The Cohiba Talisman Limited Edition 2017 is an incredibly exciting release, only the seventh limited edition from this legendary brand. A Cañonazo Doble, measuring in at 155mm with a 54 gauge, this powerhouse is one of the largest Cohibas ever made and has combined iconic details from their existing ranges to create this extraordinary cigar. The filler leaves are the classic Cohiba blend of Volado, Seco, Ligero leaves and the revered Medio Tiempo leaf, all aged for a minimum of 2 years, but the fermentation and aging process continues for the seco and ligero leaves for an additional 18 months, and occurs inside cedar barrels. The Talisman is hand rolled in the famous El Laguito factory, using the Dark Maduro leaf which grows at the very top of shade grown plants, requiring additional ageing and fermentation over 5 years to reach the color dark enough to be classified as Maduro which adds a sweetness to the flavour. Previously the Maduro leaf wrap was used exclusively by Cohiba for their Maduro 5 range, the finishing touch is the pigtail cap that adds a dash of whimsy to this fine specimen, normally only found on the Behike series. A beautiful aroma greeted us, delicious notes of cinnamon and vanilla with touches of cedar. The thick luxurious smoke Cohiba is known for begins immediately, and the flavour comes out with a bang. We found rich caramel mingled with espresso and earthy notes of wood and herbs while the aromas carry into accenting flavours. Talisman begins at a medium strength but moves up to a full by the middle and offers a touch of salt at the finish that came just under the 2 hour mark. Even though the Talisman is young and will respond well to some time to rest in your humidor, it is certainly not necessary due to the aging process of the individual components.
